You may have noticed from the title that this post is not like something I would usually post.

Two reasons for this: first, I’m travelling down to Uni today so am uploading this pre-written post remotely [check me finally understanding tech ;) ]

Second, a few weeks ago on an Instagram ad, I came across Voracious Reader’s Only.

Essentially, VRO is a mailing list you can join to read new books by new authors for free, in order to review them for the author and help them widen their audience.

This is their explanation of what they do:

“Our goal at Voracious Readers Only is to match readers like you with up-and-coming novelists in the genres you like the most.”

So over the past few weeks since joining the mailing list, I’m getting loads of free book offers each week. The email title tells me the title of the book and what genre it’s, then if I’m interested in knowing more, I can read the rest of the email. Usually there’s a summary of what the book is about and a few book titles of similar novels i.e. if you like Harry Potter, you’ll like this.

Some of them I pass on, but if it’s something I think I’d like to read, there’s a button to click in the email where you can request a free copy to review the book for the author.

When you get the copy, you can easily download it to your kindle or kindle app on your phone. Then, once you’ve read the novel, they ask that you to review it.

I thought I’d introduce any fellow readers to this opportunity too whilst I’m doing my review - I’d very much recommend VRO and if you want to sign up yourself, google VRO and get involved. Hope you enjoy it as much as I am if you do!

So, Kingdom of Embers happened to be the first book I read for them, and here I am reviewing it. (I tried to review it on Amazon too but apparently you can’t do that unless you’ve met a certain set of criteria as a customer? I don’t really understand)

About the book:

“As a creature forbidden by both vampire and witch cultures, Alena traverses the country with her mother in search of an unknown entity. When Alena finds Hunter everything changes. Their bond may be the key to answers Alena seeks. As she investigates the connection, an equally handsome, but mysterious suitor appears. Will the truth be uncovered before it is too late? Or will her Mother’s kingdom be reduced to embers?”

If you like Twilight, House of Night novels, Shade of a Vampire, or Cassandra Claire, then you'll enjoy Kingdom of Embers by Tricia Copeland.

Review:

It was a fairly interesting book. Personally, I found the story a bit slow at first; it felt as if the author was giving us a lot of seemingly unnecessary detail about Alena’s day-to-day life. Then towards the end of the novel, it felt as if everything was happening at the same time, giving the ending a bit of a sense of being rushed. I had to reread the last few pages as I missed a few specific events as they happened so fast. However, as the book is part of a larger series, if I had enjoyed reading the first book, I probably would not have had trouble with moving into the next one.

The vampire and witch mythology used is not like anything I’ve read before. Whilst inventive, I didn’t find the vampire details very believable (such as a vampire being able to have children? Or being able to, and even enjoying, walking in the sun?) However, the mythology was explained clearly and integrated smoothly into the plot.

In summary, as a book recommended for people who enjoyed the Twilight series, I’d say it fell short from my expectations.

Rating:

4/10

Would I recommend:

Not really.

So, I’ll be back next week with a more normal post - probably with at least a section about my first week back at uni.

I’ll be doing more VRO reviews on here - I’m currently reading a book for them called The Executed Executive, which I’m really enjoying so far. If you have any things I could add to my reviews (I’ve not done one for years so could do with some pointers), please comment down below or DM me on Instagram (@roxyelle01)
